Re-enact the cursing of Laman and Lemuel

Just in time for the holidays, our friends over at Latter Day Designs have released Laman and Lemuel figures in both light-skin, and cursed dark-skin varieties. In an unfortunate market twist, it seems the Church is trying to phase out some of the focus on dark skin = curse, as a story in today's Salt Lake Tribune notes.

So, order the dark-skin cursed Lemuel while you still can!

  1. Please try to have more charity and love toward people with skin darker than your own. As an active white member of the LDS church and father to an adopted daughter who is half white and half black, I appreciate the fact that the church is rightly distancing itself from the simplistic view that dark skin=curse. While we know from scriptures that this has been true with regard to certain groups of people in the past, this is not a universally accurate equation, nor does it reflect any current reality as revealed to our modern-day prophets. We know that we are each judged by our own actions and not by the actions of our forefathers. We also know that God loves all people equally, regardless of the color of their skin. We should strive to do the same and resist self-promoting tendencies to focus on divisions between groups of people that place us in a more favored position than others. I hope and pray that my daughter never sees these actions figures or is exposed to people who view God's children through such a black and white perspective. I will do everything I can to raise her to know that God loves her and that she can become like her heavenly parents in every way. Generally, I am pained to see members of the LDS church aligning themselves with political or social identifiers such as "liberal" and "conservative" above seeing themselves as brothers and sisters in the gospel. You might want to reconsider the emphasis of your blog and focus on matters of real importance.

  2. As a stake president I take accusations that the church is racist very seriously and have started a blog to address this and other issues.
